The building 3 Mare Street was a derelict shell prior to 2010 before it was refurbished to provide a new cafe and gallery space for an artist collective. Conceived originally as a one year pop-up, The Bureau was a social experiment to test new and alternative ways to subsidise creative and cultural space. Alongside a busy artistic programme of exhibitions, events and performances the artists were trained in the production of coffee and established Hackney Bureau as one of the borough’s first cafes selling the antipodean style flat-white, alongside smashed avocado and bacon baps. The success of the project led to it continuing for almost ten years, establishing itself as one of the neighbourhood’s most loved independent restaurants with a full brunch, lunch and dinner service. The building helped to finance the delivery of the illustration studios Scawfell Street and funded exhibition programmes for ANDOR Cultural.
